Last week, we launched Science On a Sphere® at the Esplora Interactive Science Center.

This is one of the most advanced educational technologies for popularizing science, allowing visitors to explore the Earth, the oceans, the atmosphere, and space through real scientific data projected onto a large spherical screen.

How does Science On a Sphere work?

Science On a Sphere (SOS) is a unique system developed by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Four synchronized projectors project animated scientific data onto the surface of a suspended sphere, creating a dynamic model of Earth or other planets. Visitors can observe, for example, weather patterns, ocean currents, climate change, earthquakes, animal migration, or astronomical phenomena in a way that is much more intuitive than traditional maps or screens.

The system utilizes hundreds of datasets from NOAA, NASA, and other scientific institutions. As a result, it can present complex natural processes in an engaging way and helps visitors better understand the connections between events on Earth and in space.

A New Dimension of Scientific Discovery

Science On a Sphere is one of the technologies that can combine education with an engaging visitor experience. Instead of static information, it offers the opportunity to observe real-time data in motion and within a global context. Visitors can thus literally observe our planet “in action” and better understand the phenomena that influence both daily life and the future.
