The faculty of forestry and wood technology (fld) forestry pavilon – the czech agricultural university in Prague

The Faculty of Forestry and Woodworking of the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague entered 2016 with a new FLD Forestry Pavilion full of modern and interesting technologies.

The main objective of the FLD Forestry Pavilion project was to improve teaching related to research at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology (FLD) and to modernize the technical background of the faculty. Another partial aim was to create a modern, practical training centre with adequate laboratory equipment, to simplify the organization of teaching and to create a background suitable for developing science and research. This was also related to the need to increase the capacity of teaching facilities and to extend practical teaching methods while increasing competitiveness in the practical education of wood and forestry students and extending cooperation with professional practice through the involvement of the FLD in joint projects.

A PROJECT CORRESPONDING TO AV TRENDS

Implementing the FLD Forestry Pavilion project was supported by the Operational Program for Research and Development for Innovation (OP VaVpI). The project was administered under the name CZ.1.05 / 4.1.00 / 16.0353 - FLD Forestry Pavilion and the realization lasted less than nine months and was completed at the end of 2015, making it one of the two most important investment projects that have been implemented in the last decades at ČZU in Prague. AV MEDIA supplied all the AV technology in this project, such as a lecture hall, five classrooms, two laboratories and a training centre. In accordance with current technical trends, fully digital AV distribution was used in all rooms to ensure perfect picture and sound. Interestingly, all projections are made up of Panasonic’s unique lamp-free laser/LED projectors. We chose them to ensure a long service life without the need for additional operating costs.

STANDARDIZING EQUIPMENT

The basis for satisfying lecturers is standardized equipment and simple control. They have to concentrate on teaching, not solve where figure out where the cable belongs, where it goes ... so the concept of room equipment is basically the same, it differs only in details according to the types of spaces.

All departments are equipped with connection points to provide more comfortable work of lecturers with analogue and digital signals, where the just come in and connect their notebook without looking for the right cables somewhere under the desk and begin the lecture. They also have an interactive SMART Podium presentation display or an all-in-one touchscreen. They serve not only as a preview of the projected content, but also allow them to conveniently control the presentation, write notes directly or highlight important points. And everything that a lecturer creates on the touch panel is displayed simultaneously on the installed large screen. Some smaller rooms have a 70” interactive touch display instead of screen and a projector for central projection. Other rooms also have a graphic document camera for scanning printed documents, transparencies or smaller items. In selected classrooms, broadcasting of a lecture is done by changing the camera.

A simple control system is common in all rooms. Each one comes with a touch or push control system for controlling AV technology from one location in the department.

A LARGE LEcTURE HALL

The largest room for teaching is a large lecture hall with a capacity of 166 students. This large lecture hall is equipped with two projections that allow teachers to view two different images from two sources, such as a presentation and additional photos or videos. Projection is provided by two electric screens and two powerful projectors. Four speakers and a total of seven microphones provide the perfect sound. The large lecture hall is equipped with an interactive presentation display, a connection point, a control panel with a touch panel for easy AV control and a desktop graphic document camera.

Thanks to the videoconference and recording system it is possible to carry out broadcasts of foreign lectures or other forms of distance learning, for example,

CLASSROOMS AND LABORATORY

The classrooms and laboratories serve both teaching and research. The central projection includes an electric screen and a lamp-free laser/LED projector. The size of the displays is optimized according to the layout of each room. Where the ceiling height does not allow a larger screen, there are preview screens for high-quality legibility even from the last row. The projection is complemented by stereo sound and a microphone.

TRAINING CENTRE

The training center is a room designed mainly for talks, meetings or training staff and faculty teams. Once again there is a projection of the laser/LED projector on an electric screen. The sound in the room is solved by using four speakers and one microphone. The Department, as in the classrooms, is equipped with a connection point, an interactive presentation display, a graphic document camera, and a touch panel control system to conveniently control not only the AV technology, but also the lighting and electric shading in the room.

INFORMATION SYSTEM

An information system has been installed throughout the building to display information from the university system. It consists of flat NEC displays located in the corridors as well as in selected rooms. A unique solution is the placement of three displays in a dusty woodworking workshop, which are in special, custom-made Armaguard protective frames.

This technological, scientific and teaching pavilion has been serving the research activities of postgraduate students and staff and teaching activities (including practical) undergraduate students since January 2016. “This unique interconnection will create the conditions for significantly improving technical education at the university while promoting the use of wood in the Czech Republic as the most important renewable raw material. The workplace will also expand the potential for developing new, practically useful methods, thereby improving the transfer of technology and knowledge to forestry and woodworking practices,” said the Dean of FLD prof. Ing. Marek Turcani, PhD. We are pleased to have contributed to their work ...
