Grand Opening of the Elephant House at the Prague ZOO

The opening of a new home for elephants and hippopotamuses provided an extraordinary event, attended by representatives from Czech and Sri Lankan political life.

I am honoured to open the valley of elephants today and its promising future. I believe that not only does this provide a better home for Prague’s elephants, but that this investment of the capital contributes to further protecting this species, once again improving the international reputation of Prague Zoo." said Prague’s mayor Bohuslav Svoboda.

After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the guests of honour and the director of the zoo moved to the pavilion, where Prague’s first baby elephant, Sita, was christened. The name derives from Sanskrit and means pure, boundless or clear, originating form the epic Ramayana.

Sita, a Female Calf

Sita, a female calf, was born on 11 February 2013 at 13:20, making her the first baby elephant in the more than 80-year history of the Prague Zoo. The baby will live with Donna, Tonya’s older sister and other elephants in the new premises in the northern part of the garden, which were ceremonially opened on 30 March.
